Celebrating the Return of Indigenous Land to Indigenous Hands Across Northern California

The Alliance for Felix Cove Celebrates the Return of Indigenous Land to Indigenous Hands Across Northern California

The return of Indigenous land into Indigenous hands is always a significant and powerful step toward justice. And we are overjoyed that Indigenous people and communities across Northern California are now successfully reclaiming access to their traditional homelands – to protect for future generations.

In June, the Indigenous-women led Sogorea Te’ Land Trust announced their work with the nonprofit Movement Generation to return 43 acres of unceded Bay Miwok territory to Indigenous care. And just a few weeks later, the Coast Miwok Council of Marin shared that it will be rematriating 26 acres of our traditional Coast Miwok homelands in Marin County.

“What is it going to look like as we grow to engage in these practices of a government that really disappeared us?”

- Corrina Gould, chair and spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan

Each of these victories is yet another reminder that colonization could not quell the power of Indigenous resistance. Together we are reclaiming and restoring connections to Indigenous ancestral lands as a way to heal from past trauma and build strength for the future.

Today we celebrate our relatives for their extraordinary work–which honors the resilience of our ancestors who stewarded these lands for time immemorial. We remain committed to partnering with our extended Indigenous communities, as well as our allies, to continue the work of reclaiming and decolonizing more of our homelands. We look forward to helping create new opportunities to restore and sustain the cultural pathways and traditional ecological practices of Indigenous people.

And as always, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous people here in California, across the country, and around the world as they seek to reclaim and restore their own homelands.
